SCREAM FOR DEAN
COLLATERAL DAMAGE

A child
a 12 year old boy
tries to sleep
on a stifling hot night
decides
like David
to climb to the roof
he climbs the ladder
lifts the trap door
he doesn’t spy Bathsheba
but American troops

A soldier
a young American
is far from home
he carries his rifle proudly
he is there to free
the people
like warriors before him
he is brave/he is scared
there is movement
on the roof
he shoots

A mother
I am a mother
cries in the night
cradles her dead son
there is no comfort
in the moonless heat
no comfort that he is free
there is sorrow
in the soldiers face
wails are soundless in reports
of collateral damage
